Homemade pretzels and whole-grain bread rolls coated with salami, ham, cheese and eggs – topped with salad leaves, cucumber and tomato slices – and the delicious cakes, bagels, fruit and drinks are in great demand . For the hungry students hot dogs, toasted sandwiches and hot pizza are offered at lunchtime. After the bell rings most of the pupils gather in a long queue around the two cafeteria counters.
More than 10 years ago, the cafeteria was established on a self initiative of parents, teachers and students. The volunteering parents are responsible for the management. More than 80 mothers and fathers are divided into four- teams by Mrs. Stockhausen Döring and work on weekdays from 8 .00am – 2.00pm and take care of the physical well-being of pupils and teachers. This ensures that both mind and body receive a healthy and vitamin-rich ‘diet’ at this school.
To meet the daily need of 100 bread roll halves, 120 pretzels, many bagels, 50 cakes, 60 toasts, 40 hot dogs and more than 150 pizza slices, the purchasing of all food is organized by dedicated parents and teachers, to whom we are very grateful. Therefore the food is purchased fresh every week at Penny, Aldi, Lidl and Metro. Also, a Steglitzer bakery delivers freshly baked bread every morning. Pretzels and bagels are brought several times a month from two caterers.
The cafeteria is located on the ground floor and is easily reached from the schoolyard. During the past several years, initially donated kitchen equipment has been replaced by professional equipment.
Now, after various reconstructions, the cafeteria is not just a place to buy and consume food. The students also like to spend their free time here because they can find the peace to concentrate on doing homework or taking/giving private lessons.
Each year a trip is organized for the many hard working volunteers as a thank you: guided tours through the KPM, the KaDeWe and the Bode Museum are some of the highlights of recent years. Furthermore the students set up a Christmas festival with music, nicely decorated tables and delicious food for the helpers. An enjoyable atmosphere in the cafeteria is created.
